Berner named as Swiss U19s head coach

Oporto Sports client Bruno Berner has been unveiled as the new head coach of the Switzerland under-19s side, starting his role on 1 August.

Berner, who was capped 16 times by the Swiss senior side, including being part of their Euro 2004 squad as a player, was head coach of SC Kriens from July 2017 until the end of last season, winning the Swiss third tier title, keeping the club in the second tier on three consecutive occasions and reaching the Swiss Cup quarter-finals twice.

Speaking about the announcement, Berner said: “I am thrilled to be able to represent Swiss football with all its outstanding values as an under-19 national coach in the future. I would like to thank the Swiss FA for the trust they have placed in me, and I am delighted to be able to give my best for the next important generation of Swiss football.”

Berner’s side will compete in the UEFA Euro 2022 under-19 Championship qualification Group 1 against England, Sweden and Andorra, with the games taking place in Sweden from 7-17 November 2021.
